National Theatre Live

National Theatre Live launched in June, 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre featuring Helen Mirren. It has since broadcast more than fifty productions live, from National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Young Vic Theatre and other brilliant organizations in London’s West End and even Broadway in New York City. National Theatre Live has attracted over 8 million people in over 2,500 venues across 65 countries worldwide. Previous productions have included Benedict Cumberbatch in a record breaking production of Hamlet, Tom Hiddleston in Coriolanus, Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan in David Hare’s Skylight, Peter Schaffer's Amadeus and Sondheim's Follies at the National Theatre, Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land featuring X-Men co-stars Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, Oscar Nominee Andrew Garfield, Russell Tovey and Nathan Lane in Angels in America directed by multiple Tony Award winning director Marianne Elliot (War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time) and so on.

Performed in promenade, Nicholas Hytner’s production will thrust the audience into the street party that greets Caesar’s return, the congress that witnesses his murder, the rally that assembles for his funeral and the chaos that explodes in its wake.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) presents RSC Live from Stratford-upon-Avon, its programme to screen productions live from Shakespeare’s home town in collaboration with Trafalgar Releasing. The first live broadcast was Richard II, directed by RSC Artistic Director, Gregory Doran, with David Tennant in the title role. It was screened live to cinemas around the UK and distributed to North America, Australia, Japan and Northern Europe.
2018 marks the halfway point in this landmark project to broadcast the entire canon of Shakespeare’s work across the globe. Since 2013, the RSC has broadcast 22 of its productions, with screenings beginning in China in 2017.Over 600,000 people have now watched the broadcasts in over 20 countries. In the household of Olivia, two campaigns are being quietly waged - one by the lovesick Lord Orsino against the heart of the indifferent Olivia; the other by an alliance of servants and hangers-on against the high-handedness of her steward, the pompous Malvolio. When Orsino engages the cross-dressed Viola to plead with Olivia on his behalf, a bittersweet chain of events follows.
The Globe revisits its award-winning Twelfth Night of 2002 with an all-male Original Practices production, exploring clothing, music, dance and settings possible in the Globe of around 1601. Oscar and three-time Tony Award winner, and the Globe’s first Artistic Director, Mark Rylance, reprises his performance as Olivia in this revival production, 10 years after its original premiere at The Globe.

In 16th century Venice, when a merchant must default on a large loan from an abused Jewish moneylender for a friend with romantic ambitions, the bitterly vengeful creditor demands a gruesome payment instead.
In some of his most highly-charged scenes, Shakespeare dramatises the competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, religious law and civil society, justice and mercy, while in the character of Shylock he created one of the most memorable outsiders in all theatre. Oscar and Tony Award winner, and ’High Sparrow’ in HBO series Game of Thrones, Jonathan Pryce is Shylock in this revival of the thrilling 2015 Globe production with Rachel Pickup from Elementary as Portia. The original cast of this production toured China in 2016 and was well received by audiences and critics alike.
